Asking for Help...Do It!

The second step is talk to someone, support groups, family, and ask for help. Even though you may feel ashamed, embarrassed or angry because you have an illness, talking does help. Your family and friends need to know just how bad you feel so that they will understand the extent of the disease. Also, you need to get all those overwhelming feelings out of your system. Don't sugar coat it. Be honest and sincere about what you can and cannot do right now. For instance, if you are a student and can't finish your classes, let your family or friends know. If you are unable to complete simple tasks like paying bills, buying groceries, eating or sleeping let them know. Ask them to visit some websites made for families and friends of depressed individuals. This will enable them to know what to say to you and where they can go for help.

In addition, affection is very important. Try to let your friends and family know that you need to be touched and hugged. This will enable you to feel connected and cared about. If you live alone it may be a good idea to move in with family temporarily. Don't feel embarrassed. Everyone has gone through difficult times in their lives and if you ask you will be surprised at how generous people can be. Allow others to help you make decisions. This will be a great help to you.

For instance, ask a friend or family member to buy groceries and good, simple food for you to eat. Include paper supplies and toiletries so that you don't need to worry about minor necessities for awhile. If you are having trouble consistently paying your bills, ask a friend to pay them temporarily using your checkbook. Asking your friends and family to help with everyday tasks will relieve you tremendously while you are waiting for the medicines to work. For doctors appointments, ask a friend or family member to drive you and stay for the visit. This forces you to make every appointment and allows your family to be a part of your treatment, maintaining consistency.
